Lawrence Eusebius Callahan, M.D., age 76, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, passed away on Monday, January 20, 2025, with his loving wife, Regina, by his side. Born July 18, 1948, in Queens, New York, to the late Lawrence E. and Virginia B. (Von Patton) Callahan.
Remaining to cherish Lawrence’s memory are his spouse of 44 years, Regina; Children: Celeste Ann Callahan, Audrey Lynn (Zachary) Webb, and Grace Marie Callahan; Granddaughter, Emma Grace Callahan; nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Klingenberg; and his brother, John “Jack” Callahan.
Lawrence graduated from Martin Van Buren High School, Queens, NY, in 1966, then went on to college at the State University of New York-Buffalo, earning a dual degree in Biology and Chemistry in 1970. He continued advanced studies at the Università di Bologna in Bologna, Italy, graduating with his medical degree in Medicine and Surgery in 1978.
After completing his Internship and Residency at St. Francis Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he became nationally Board Certified in Internal Medicine.
During this time, Lawrence married the love of his life, a registered nurse, Regina Liberatore, on October 18, 1980, at St. Joseph Church in Bloomfield. They settled in Sharpsburg.
Lawrence continued his medical career over the years as a Board-Certified ER Physician at Central Medical Center, Weirton Medical Center, Passavant Hospital and MedExpress. While at Central Medical Center, he also administered care at the internal medicine clinics.
Toward the end of his career, Lawrence traveled to underserved communities in the U.S. to provide care; his last assignment took him to the Indian Reservation in Riverton, Wyoming.
He had outside interests and hobbies in astronomy, magic, art, music (pop, rock, folk, and Italian opera), history, museums, books on tape, the New York Times Crossword Puzzle, and world travel.
Lawrence was known as a humble, caring, brilliant, and compassionate physician. He was always there for anyone in medical need - stranger, neighbor, family, or friend. He treated everyone equally and always gave them his best. Being a physician was not a job; it was his passion. In addition to being a dedicated physician, he was a dedicated and devoted family man. He adored his three daughters, his granddaughter, and especially his wife. His family was the center of his heart.
He was a long-time member of Christ the King Parish, St. Mary Church. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025, from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Slater Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc. Sharpsburg (formerly Worrell Funeral Home, Inc.), 820 Main Street, Sharpsburg, PA 15215. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 10:30 A.M., at Christ The King Parish in St. Mary Church, 210 Garnier Street, Sharpsburg, PA 15215. Interment to follow at Christ Our Redeemer Northside Cemetery, 204 Cemetery Lane, Pittsburgh, PA 15227.
