Jack L. Merchant passed away on August 13, 2025, in Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania. Beloved brother,
uncle and friend. He was born on April 29, 1946, in Brackenridge, PA to William E. Merchant, Sr. and Esther “May” Merchant (Gibson).
Jack graduated from Tarentum High School in 1964, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served as an Ammunition Technician during the Vietnam War, received an honorable discharge in 1971; title Lance Corporal receiving three service medicals. Returning home, Jack held multiple jobs in his life mostly a laborer working for Allegheny Ludlum in Brackenridge, and US Steel in Pittsburgh.
He was a resident of Etna and Sharpsburg for the past 40 years. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 709 and the R. E. Club in Sharpsburg. He enjoyed going out with girlfriend Carol to listen to live music. He was a lover of the beach, fishing, sports especially the Steelers and Penguins, horses and hanging out with friends and family.
Jack was proceeded in death by his parents William & May Merchant. Sr., his sister Margaret Spruill VA and longtime girlfriend Marylyn Horton. His memory will live on through his brother William (Bill) Merchant, Jr., his nieces and nephews Elizabeth Daugherty, Jennifer Merchant, Mandy Merchant, Johnny Spruill (Diane), Danny Spruill (Nora), and Nancy Price (Mark), James Daugherty (Lisa), Abigail Luzik (Ryan), Wyatt Luzik, Michael Spruill (Sammi) Callie Spruill, Sara Price and his beloved girlfriend Carol Pick.
A private memorial service will be held. Arrangements entrusted to Slater Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc. Sharpsburg.
