Fr. Joseph Clifton Hill Jr., C.S.Sp. of Bethel Park, a member of the Congregation of the Holy

Spirit, died peacefully on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at Peter’s Township Nursing Home,

McMurray, PA. He was 89 years old.

Father Hill was born July 20, 1936, in Baton Rouge, LA. He professed his vows as a member of

the Congregation of the Holy Spirit on August 22, 1959, at Holy Ghost Novitiate in Ridgefield, CT

and was ordained to the Priesthood June 3, 1965, at St. Mary’s Seminary, Ferndale in Norwalk,

CT.

Fr. Hill’s first assignments were at Duquesne and Rice Universities where he received a master’s

and PhD in physics. In 1976, he became the Coordinator of Community Conferences at

Duquesne. The following year, he went to Fu Jen University in Taipei, Taiwan, as a teacher and

to continue his research. In 1979, he returned to Duquesne as a professor in the physics

department. After a brief sabbatical in 1987, he came back to Duquesne until 2000, when he

retired from teaching and went to Baton Rouge to care for his parents. In 2008, he was in

residence and ministered at St. Agnes Church in Baton Rouge while continuing his academic

work for the Institute of Advanced Physics. Fr. Hill assisted at St. Agnes until 2021 when he

retired fully to Libermann Hall in Bethel Park, PA.

Fr. Hill was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Clifton and Olga Hill. He is survived by his

brother Richard Hill of Hot Springs Village, AR, nieces, nephews and extended family members.

There will be a viewing in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel at the Spiritan Center, 6230

Brush Run Road, Bethel Park on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, starting at 9:00am with the

Funeral Mass being celebrated immediately after at 10:30am. Burial will take place at the St.

Mary’s Cemetery, Sharpsburg, PA.

In memory of Fr. Hill, donations may be made to the Congregation of the Holy Spirit designated

for retirement or for the educations of future Holy Spirit Fathers and Brothers 6230 Brush Run

Road, Bethel Park PA 15102.
